Booking choice: The official guided tour, from $35 per person. Check dates Tour details
In 2024-25, 457,525 people paid for an Opera House tour, according to the House's annual report. Most of them booked the same thing: the official one-hour tour from the Welcome Centre. It is the right choice for most visitors. Not for all of them.
Below: what each tour costs in 2026, how long it takes, what you see, which languages run, and the official-only options you can't book here, such as the Architectural Tour and the step-free Mobility Access Tour.
The quick answer
For most people the official one-hour tour ($35 online, about A$50) is the one: the foyers, the halls free that day and the Utzon story. Add lunch for $64 if you'd eat on the harbour anyway. Theatre lovers who can face a 7am start should book the backstage tour ($138), which goes in through the Stage Door and ends with breakfast in the Green Room. Mandarin speakers have their own tour; wheelchair users need the official Mobility Access Tour.

Which Sydney Opera House tour is best?
The official one-hour tour for most visitors. The backstage tour suits anyone curious about how a show is made, and the tour with a meal is the best value if you'd eat on the harbour anyway.
Every tour on this site, including the two that never go inside:
| Tour | Length | From | Inside the House | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Official guided tour | 1 hour | $35 | Foyers + halls free that day | A first visit |
| Tour with a meal | 2 hours | $64 | The same tour, then lunch | Eating on the harbour |
| Backstage tour | 2.5 hours | $138 | Corridors, pit, Green Room | Theatre fans, ages 10+ |
| Tour in Chinese | 1 hour | $35 | The same tour | Fluent Mandarin speakers |
| Sunrise kayak | 2 hours | $124 | None: seen from the water | Dawn photos, ages 12+ |
| Rocks walk | 2 hours | $20 | None: outside only | City history on foot |
The tours sold only by the House (Architectural, Mobility Access, Taste of the House) are further down.
The tour most visitors pick: one hour with a live guide, free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
Check dates for the official guided tourHow much does a Sydney Opera House tour cost?
From $35 online for the standard one-hour tour, about A$50 for an adult. The tour with a meal is $64 and the backstage tour $138.
The House loads its prices live on the booking page, so these are the 2026 figures that several sellers quote for the official tour:
| Ticket | Official tour, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Adult, online | A$50 |
| Adult, at the desk | A$55 |
| Concession | A$40 |
| Child, 5 to 14 | A$30 |
| Family, 2 adults + 2 children | A$130 |
| Under 5 | Free |
Older guides that quote A$43 for an adult are out of date. The backstage tour sits in another bracket: sellers list it between A$171 and A$199 in 2026, and $138 here. More in the backstage tour guide.
How long does the Sydney Opera House tour take?
One hour, on your feet the whole time. Arrive 15 minutes early: resellers warn that tours leave without latecomers after about 5 minutes.
The official tour page lists 60 minutes, up to 2.5 km of walking and around 300 stairs, with "no lift or escalator access" and few places to sit. Check in at the Welcome Centre on the Lower Concourse. Backpacks go in the free cloakroom; large luggage and strollers aren't allowed, so leave the suitcase at the hotel.
The longer formats: the Architectural Tour is 75 minutes, the backstage tour 135 minutes, and Taste of the House runs four hours with food at three venues. The tour with a meal adds about an hour for lunch.

What do you see on the standard Opera House tour?
Foyers, at least one hall when rehearsals allow, and views you can't get from outside. The route changes daily and no theatre is guaranteed.
The guide walks you through the story: an international competition with 233 entries, the young Dane Jørn Utzon chosen in 1957, his resignation in 1966, and a 14-year build that cost $102 million against a $7 million estimate. You also see the House as a working venue. Guests sometimes catch a rehearsal or a crew putting up a set.
What you don't get is a fixed list. The House says the spaces "may differ each time due to availability". The Concert Hall, renewed and reopened in 2022 with new acoustic reflectors, is the room most people hope for. The Joan Sutherland Theatre often has a set on stage, which can keep groups out.

Is the tour with a meal worth it?
Yes, if you planned to eat at the House anyway. For $29 more than the plain tour you get one main and one drink at Midden by Mark Olive or Opera Bar.
The tour with a meal is the same one-hour tour, then a voucher from the Welcome Centre for one main and a glass of wine, a beer or a soft drink. Midden by Mark Olive serves Indigenous Australian food on the promenade; Opera Bar is the classic harbour terrace. Mind the redemption windows on the listing: Opera Bar 11:30am to 6pm, Midden 11:30am to 2:30pm for lunch or 5pm to 6pm for dinner.
Opera Bar's inside dining is closed for renovation in 2026, and its own site says the harbourside tables stay open. The House's own Tour & Dine package adds Winnie's to the list of venues.

The one-hour tour, then a main and a drink by the water at Midden or Opera Bar. Two hours in all.
Explore the tour with a meal Tour detailsIs the backstage tour better than the standard tour?
Different, not better. It starts at 7am, takes 135 minutes, caps the group at 12, goes through the Stage Door and ends with breakfast in the Green Room. It costs about four times as much.
The standard tour shows you rooms the audience sees. The backstage tour shows you the ones it doesn't: corridors, rehearsal spaces, the orchestra pit, props. Children under 10 can't go, and flat, enclosed shoes are required. If you have one morning and no interest in stagecraft, stick to the hour. The full picture is in our backstage tour guide.
In through the Stage Door at 7am, then breakfast in the Green Room. Ages 10 and up.
Check dates for the backstage tourWhat languages are Opera House tours in?
English runs most often. The official tour also runs in French, German and Spanish, and the House offers Japanese, Korean and Mandarin as separate tours.
Each language is its own product with its own times, so book the language, not only the tour. On this site, the official guided tour covers English, French, German and Spanish. The tour in Chinese sounds like a multi-language option from its listing title, In Your Language, but it is led in Mandarin only. Book it if you are fluent.
Japanese and Korean tours are sold by the House and by some resellers; one reseller lists them at 30 minutes, half the English tour. Check the official tours page for times before you plan around one.
The official tour led in Mandarin: the same hour, the same price as the English one.
Check dates for the tour in ChineseAre there architectural, accessible or food tours?

- Architectural Tour: 75 minutes, ages 5 and up, on set dates. How the architects, engineers and builders made the shells, with a visit to Bennelong restaurant.
- Mobility Access Tour: a step-free hour, daily, with 11:30am and 2:45pm listed. For wheelchair users, people with mobility aids and anyone who struggles with stairs.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to book an Opera House tour in advance?
For the English tour, a day or two ahead is usually enough outside the holidays. Early slots and the backstage tour can sell out 1 to 2 weeks ahead in peak season, and desk tickets cost about A$5 more than online.
Can children do the Opera House tour?
Yes. Children aged 5 to 14 pay a child price and under-5s go free, but strollers aren't allowed and there are about 300 stairs. The backstage tour is for ages 10 and up.
Is the Opera House tour wheelchair accessible?
The standard tour is not: about 300 stairs and no lift. Book the official step-free Mobility Access Tour instead.
Do tours run on public holidays?
Mostly, but not on Christmas Day, New Year's Eve or before 11am on New Year's Day, according to the tour listing.
