New Year's Eve is the one night the Opera House stops being a drop-in landmark. The Forecourt turns into a ticketed viewing area, Macquarie Street closes before dawn, and inside the building two Opera Australia performances start at 7:45pm with an interval timed for the 9pm fireworks.
Below: the free Forecourt booking, what the paid nights cost, what you can really see from the foyers, the latecomer rule, what to wear, and how to get there and home.
The quick answer
The Forecourt is free but needs a booked ticket: bookings open at 10am on 26 December, up to six tickets per booking, entry between 12pm and 3pm only. Inside, the Opera Gala (Concert Hall) and La Bohème (Joan Sutherland Theatre) both start at 7:45pm and cost from $249 plus a $9.80 fee. Latecomers are not admitted, foyer views of the midnight fireworks are partly blocked, and you should arrive by public transport.
How do you get free tickets for the Opera House Forecourt on NYE?
Book online from 10am on 26 December. Tickets are free, limited to six per booking, and you must enter between 12pm and 3pm.
The official Forecourt page is blunt: bookings are essential. The Forecourt sits at the foot of the Monumental Steps, between the House and the Royal Botanic Garden, and it looks straight at both the 9pm and the midnight fireworks. The Opera House brought in tickets so people would stop camping out from dawn. You still give up your afternoon, though. Entry closes at 3pm.
Be online at 9:55am on Boxing Day. Free harbour spots in the city go fast, and this is one of the best. There is a reminder sign-up on the same page if you would rather get an email than set an alarm.
The City of Sydney's NYE vantage point listing fills in the house rules: about 6,000 people, open midday to 1am, no re-entry, alcohol sold on site but none brought in, and your own food is fine.

What do the NYE Opera Gala and La Bohème cost?
Both start at 7:45pm on Thursday 31 December 2026 and cost from $249 plus a $9.80 transaction fee. Dinner and the midnight party are $499 each on top.
Opera Australia announced both nights in a media release on 14 May 2026. The Opera Gala Concert fills the Concert Hall with the big arias and a full orchestra, about 2 hours 30 minutes with one interval. No singers or conductor were listed as of 21 October. La Bohème on New Year's Eve is the Sydney premiere of Constantine Costi's new production in the Joan Sutherland Theatre, with Maria Teresa Leva as Mimì, Matteo Desole as Rodolfo and Andrea Battistoni conducting. It runs about 2 hours 15 minutes and is sung in Italian with English and Simplified Chinese surtitles.
Pick by mood. The gala is a party with greatest hits; Bohème is a real story, and act two happens to be a crowded Christmas Eve in Paris. If the $249 floor stings, the same Bohème plays from 2 January to 17 March 2027 from $79. Our cheap tickets guide has the other discounts.
| Option | Where | From (AUD) | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opera Gala Concert | Concert Hall | $249 + $9.80 fee | Arias, full orchestra, 9pm fireworks at interval |
| La Bohème | Joan Sutherland Theatre | $249 + $9.80 fee | Full opera, 9pm fireworks at interval |
| Pre-performance dinner | Northern Foyer, from 5:30pm | $499 | Three courses, wines; show ticket extra |
| Midnight Party | Northern Foyer, after the show | $499 | Canapés, drinks, entertainment; show ticket extra |
| Platinum Package | Either show | $1,956 + $9.80 fee | Dinner, Platinum seat, programme, interval champagne, party |
Can you see the fireworks from inside the Opera House?
Partly. Opera Australia says foyer views of the midnight fireworks are partially obstructed and may not include the Harbour Bridge. The 9pm show falls in the interval.
That warning is on both NYE production pages. Midnight Party guests watch from the Northern Foyer. Ticket holders without the party may get into a limited number of outdoor viewing areas after the show, subject to capacity and not guaranteed. Our honest read: buy a show ticket for the show, not for the view.
Two other options sit on the site. Doltone House runs Under the Stars on the Western Broadwalk facing the bridge, 6:30pm to 1am, with a five-course dinner, drinks and seats for both fireworks; entry closes at 10pm and there are no pass-outs. Bennelong also runs its own NYE dinner, booked through the restaurant. The Opera House's NYE hub lists every event on the site.

What time should you arrive, and are latecomers let in?
No. On NYE latecomers are not admitted to the performances. Forecourt guests must be through the gate by 3pm.
Opera Australia's NYE FAQs are short on mercy: "Latecomers will not be admitted." On a normal night ushers wait for a gap in the music; on 31 December they don't. The same page says ticket holders enter the site from Macquarie Street between 4pm and 10pm, tickets are scanned there, screenshots are not accepted, and every bag is checked. Treat those times as the pattern; the FAQ was written for the last NYE and may be refreshed.
Our plan for a 7:45pm curtain: be on Macquarie Street by 6pm, through security by 6:30pm, drink in hand by 7pm. Dinner guests start at 5:30pm.
Dress: there is no formal dress code, but both production pages ask you to "dress up to the nines", and most people do. The dress code guide covers what that means in practice. On the Forecourt, think hat, sunscreen and layers for after dark. Sunshades and chairs are banned.
How do you get to the Opera House on New Year's Eve?
On foot from Martin Place or St James stations. Macquarie Street and the Opera House car park close, and Circular Quay is shut to most transport from the afternoon.
The City of Sydney's Forecourt listing gives the closures below. Taxis cannot drop off near the venue and parking is not available, says Opera Australia. Expect pedestrian diversions both ways, and a long walk after midnight.
Getting home, head for Martin Place or St James; Wynyard is reached from King Street only. Transport for NSW publishes the final plan in December, so check it on the day.
| Transport | On 31 December |
|---|---|
| Macquarie Street | Closed to traffic from 4am until 10am on 1 January |
| Opera House car park | Closed for the same period |
| Trains | No stops at Circular Quay after 3pm; use Martin Place or St James |
| Light rail | No services to Circular Quay from 2pm |
| Buses | Move to Martin Place from 12pm, Hyde Park from 5pm |
| Ferries | No stops at Circular Quay after 5pm |
Can you tour the Opera House on New Year's Eve?
No. The Welcome Centre, where tours start, is closed on New Year's Eve, and tour listings mark 31 December as a closure day. Book the 30th or 2 January.
The official map page lists the Welcome Centre as closed on Good Friday, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve, and reseller calendars for the one-hour tour show the same three closure days. Late December is peak season, so book a morning slot a week or two ahead.
Doing both is a good plan. Take the official tour a day or two before, and on the night you will know which foyer you are standing in. For a slower day, the tour with a meal adds a main and a drink by the water.

One hour inside with a live guide: foyers, the halls free that day and the Utzon story. Closed on 31 December, so go before or after.
